SEATTLE -- Native American community leaders are angry about the killing of John Williams earlier this week and they want the Mayor, Police Chief and anybody else who will listen to know it. John T. Williams was shot and killed by a Seattle police officer on Monday after being ordered to drop a knife with a 3-inch blade and a piece of wood. Many members of Seattle's Native American community say the death of the woodcarver was not the first time they've been targeted by police. Williams was a First Nations totem carver who was reportedly deaf in one ear.

Confusion, mistrust remains in Indian land redress

nts Confusion, mistrust remains in Indian land redress Shirley Butterfly DeVolve inherited 52 acres on Montana's vast Blackfeet Indian Reservation when her father died in 1980. The problem is, a part of an acre is on this ridge, a fraction of an acre in that valley, one-hundredth of an acre here and there. Dozens of relatives own tiny adjacent parcels, making it difficult for anyone to use or sell the land. DeVolve, 57, has a map of the parcels, much of it leased for decades by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs to private interests for cattle grazing. But the federal government _ which serves as trustee for some 56 million acres of land owned by tens of thousands of American Indians and Alaska Natives _ seldom sent checks, DeVolve said.

Update on Proposed Commercial Well next to Montezuma Well On March 15th , 2010 the Yavapai County Supervisors voted to grant Montezuma Rimrock Water Company a Use Permit to operate a commercial well less than 300 feet from Montezuma Well National Monument. The Supervisors chose to ignore County ordinances requiring setbacks for the well head from neighboring property boundaries, and other County ordinances including the requirement for public participation in the process and required notification of significant parties affected by this action including Montezuma Well National Monument itself. Claiming over and over again that the permit application was a land use decision and not a water issue the Supervisors seemed to be unaware that the land use is for a commercial well which obviously is a water issue. If this logic is considered legally correct by County and State Laws, clearly, there is a need to modify these laws as this logic is obviously incoherent at best. Arizona law in regards to land and water is entirely archaic, perhaps even Neanderthal.

The U.S. Campaign to solve the "Indian problem" (they have the land and the whites want it) continues today! Through the intentionally inept policies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and various laws passed by Congress, this Reservation has been transformed from a paradise 150 years ago to less than 3rd world status.
That one word evokes many emotions and concepts. To many in the United States it equates to treason and rebellion. This sad fact is a result of ignorance. If a man has the right to vote but is always told that voting is pointless, or worse illegal, and he believes such to be the truth it cannot be said that he truly has such a right. It has not always been so.

Jan. 11, 2010 "True, the white man brought great change. But the varied fruits of his civilization, though highly colored and inviting, are sickening and deadening. And if it be the part of civilization to maim, rob, and thwart, then what is progress? I am going to venture that the man who sat on the ground in his tipi meditating on life and its meaning, accepting the kinship of all creatures, and acknowledging unity with the universe of things, was infusing into his being the true essence of civilization..

Dec. 5, 2009 Some 8,000 kilometres from the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Native American environmental experts from 66 tribes came together at a summit here this week to address the most pressing needs in their communities - problems, all emphasised, that know no geographic boundaries. (Image: Jared Rodriguez / t r u t h o u t; Adapted: NASA, BillRhodesPhoto ) These include water and air pollution, superfund cleanup, mining and illegal dumping, as well as the impacts of climate change. Increasingly frequent "100-year" floods in Oklahoma, the disappearance of medicinal plants, the uncharacteristic unreliability of monsoon season in New Mexico, and diminished snow pack on sacred peaks have left most tribal people with little doubt that climate change is already here. "There are those who still rely on traditional agriculture for their livelihood and for ceremonial purposes - the growing of corn, the harmonious relationship between the seasons," said Milton Bluehouse of the New Mexico Environment Department, who is also a member of the Navajo Nation.

Oct. 15, 2009 Introduction Do you think you are "Indian at heart" or were an Indian in a past life? Do you admire native ways and want to incorporate them into your life and do your own version of a sweat lodge or a vision quest? Have you seen ads, books, and websites that offer to train you to be come a shaman in an easy number of steps, a few days on the weekend, or for a fee? Have you really thought this all the way through? Have you thought about how native people feel about what you might want to do? Please think about these important points before you take that fateful step and expend time, money, and emotional investment: Native people DO NOT believe it is ethical to charge money for any ceremony or teaching. Any who charge you even a penny are NOT authentic. Native traditionalists believe the ONLY acceptable way to transmit traditional teachings is orally and face-to-face. Any allegedly traditional teachings in books or on websites are NOT authentic.

To date, 99 of these have come true. From the time that the 100th prophecy is fulfilled, the red sky prophecy's fulfillment is purported to be seven to ten years beyond that date. "Much to the surprise of many of my white friends, Stalking Wolf was a prophet -- a true prophet -- the kind that 100% of his prophecies come true." Tom continues, "Out of all of the personal and major prophecies that Grandfather foretold, there are four that stand out above all the rest.

July 1, 2009 nifer Hathaway Today I received an email regarding a peace caravan to the Mohawks of Akwasasne. There will be speakers and socials on Cornwall Island today. This is a peace protest to bring attention to the fact that the Canadian border patrol has begun carrying weapons inside the reservation- sovereign turf- and that following a series of violent attacks against indigenous people who live on the reservation [including women and children and even a baby in a stroller at one event], predator drones out of Fort Drum NY are being flown over the reservation. Yes, the same military weapons we are using to blow up tribal people in Afghanistan are now flying over sovereign native territory, treating Mohawks as "insurgents" because they refused to allow guns on their land. In the beginning of May, Canada's border guards were authorized to carry 9 mm Berrettas.

May 7, 2009 Barack Obama plainly aspires to join the select ranks of United States presidents who led the nation through national crises with relative wisdom and resolve. Obama and his supporters often invoke Lincoln, Kennedy, and FDR as historical exemplars. But in one important respect, Obama need reach no higher than to emulate the precedent set by Republican president Warren Harding. Rightly reviled as one of the worst presidents in American history for the corruption and mendacity of his cabinet (known, for good reason, as the Ohio Gang), Harding should nevertheless be acknowledged for freeing 24 political prisoners (excluding, of course, most IWW activists) in his first year of taking office in 1921. Among the beneficiaries of Harding's conciliatory gesture was Eugene V.

Posted April 19, 2009 This Animal Guide offers power and wisdom to the individual when they “communicate” with it, conveying their respect and trust. This does not necessarily mean that you actually pet or spend time with this animal, more that you are open to learning its lessons. For some, knowing what is their totem animal is almost an innate process. It’s as if they’ve always known, inexplicably drawn to the animal or having a special feeling for the animal’s energy. For others, they wonder how to tell what their animal totem is.

Black was the senior regulator during the Savings and Loans (S&L) crisis, and an Associate Professor of Economics and Law at the University of Missouri (bio). Black says that massive fraud is what caused the economic crisis. As one example, he explains that everyone involved knew that the CDOs which packaged subprime loans were not AAA credit-worthy (which means that they are completely risk-free). He also said that the exotic instruments (CDOs, CDS, etc.

March 6, 2009 It's late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But, being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea.

Feb. 23, 2009 This is a clear cut case of upside down justice in this country. A Lakota Native American gets put in jail for defending himself against being run over by a Federal agency truck on his own private property. Marc Wisecarver was raised in Wounded Knee District, in the country about 9 miles north of Manderson, SD. He attended Rockyford School, Red Cloud School, and graduated from Little Wound High School in 1988.
