Microsoft Device Extracts Forensic Data
Maly 2, 2008 Microsoft has reportedly developed a small plug-in device that can be used by investigators to quickly extract forensic data from computers that may have been used in crimes. The Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor (COFEE) is a USB "thumb drive" that Microsoft quietly distributed to a handful of law-enforcement agencies last June. The COFEE device contains 150 commands that dramatically cut the time it takes to gather digital evidence. It can decrypt passwords and analyze a computer's Internet activity and data stored in the computer. COFEE lets the investigator scan for evidence on site, eliminating the necessity for physically seizing the computer and potentially losing data once it's disconnected from the network and powered down.. » read more
NSA Had Access Built into Microsoft Windows
Heiss - A CARELESS mistake by Microsoft programmers has revealed that special access codes prepared by the US National Security Agency have been secretly built into Windows. The NSA access system is built into every version of the Windows operating system now in use, except early releases of Windows 95 (and its predecessors). The discovery comes close on the heels of the revelations earlier this year that another US software giant, Lotus, had built an NSA "help information" trapdoor into its Notes system, and that security functions on other software systems had been deliberately crippled. The first discovery of the new NSA access system was made two years ago by British researcher Dr Nicko van Someren. But it was only a few weeks ago when a second researcher rediscovered the access system.. » read more

They Criticized Vista. And They Should Know
ONE year after the birth of Windows Vista, why do so many Windows XP users still decline to “upgrade”? Microsoft says high prices have been the deterrent. Last month, the company trimmed prices on retail packages of Vista, trying to entice consumers to overcome their reluctance. In the United States, an XP user can now buy Vista Home Premium for $129.95, instead of $159.95.. » read more
German Psychotherapists Demand Ban on Computer Killer Games
November 30, 2007 (LPAC)--The German Society of Psychotherapists (GwG) called for a total ban against violent computer games, in a statement issued yesterday from Cologne. This worthy attack, aimed at the heart of death-cult youth brainwashing tactics, took place only days after the LaRouche Youth Movement intervened sharply at a Berlin event on the same grouping. The society pronounced, "Killer games are landmines for the soul of young people," noting that the games give players bonus points for each person they kill. The "image of man" disfigured in this way in the minds of young people, is inhuman, and must therefore be banned by law. (Take note that the word they used, "das Menschenbild", which translates as "the image of man", is highly reminiscent of Friedrich Schiller and is rarely heard today outside of church services.. » read more
'Spring Forward' May Not Compute
Earlier daylight-saving time could foil some device calendarsFor three weeks this March and April, Microsoft Corp. warns that users of its calendar programs "should view any appointments … as suspect until they communicate with all meeting invitees."Wow, that's sort of jarring — is something treacherous afoot?Actually, it's a potential problem in any software that was programmed before a 2005 law decreed that daylight-saving time would start three weeks earlier and end one week later, beginning this year. Congress decided that more early evening daylight would translate into energy savings.Software created earlier is set to automatically advance its timekeeping by one hour on the first Sunday in April, not the second Sunday in March (that's March 11 this year).. » read more
