TV Food Ads Promote Bad Diets

Study found they peddle huge amounts of sugar and fat, with few fruits and vegetables If you let TV ads determine what you eat, you'll end up with huge amounts of fat and sugar but precious few vegetables and fruits in your diet. That's the finding of a new study that analyzes what would happen if a person were to eat 2,000 calories of foods that are advertised on the tube. dblclick('xxlA'); Researchers found that such a diet would include 25 times the recommended servings of sugar and 20 times the recommended servings of fat in a daily diet. But it would include less than half the recommended servings of vegetables, fruit and dairy products. "The results of this study suggest the foods advertised on television tend to oversupply nutrients associated with chronic illness -- e.. » read more

Corporate Lobbyists and Public Relations Firms behind Cable News Outlets

March 1, Since 2007, at least 75 registered lobbyists, public relations representatives and corporate officials have appeared on cable news broadcasts "with no disclosure of the corporate interests that paid them," The Nation magazine (March 1) reveals.   Many of these people are "paid by companies and trade groups to manage their public image and promote their financial and political interests," writes the magazine's Sebastian Jones, a freelance reporter after a four-month-long probe.   "Many have been regulars on more than one of the cable networks, turning in dozens---and in some cases hundreds---of appearances," Jones reports.   For example, Tom Ridge, identified as the former governor of Pennsylvania, appeared on MSNBC's Hardball With Chris Matthews urging the White House to "create nuclear power plants." What viewers were not told, though, is that Ridge since 2005 has pocketed $530,659 in executive compensation for serving on the board of Exelon, the nation's biggest nuclear power company, Jones writes.. » read more

When all this GEO Terrorism started during the era of Musharraf, many of us didn’t believe and listen to the saner elements who warned us about the propaganda and the lies being churned out  by some anchors and the media owners.. » read more

Government's £6 million 'Bedtime Story' climate change ad: most pernicious waste of taxpayers' money ever? (UK)

Dec. 17, 2009 (Oct. 12, 2009) The government has spent £6 million on a hard-hitting commercial warning children of the perils of failing to check under their beds and in their cupboards before they go to sleep.   The advert – “Watch Out – Or The Bogeyman Will Get You!” – has been rushed out by Ed Miliband’s Department of Ignorance And Fear Promotion (formerly Dept of Energy and Climate Change)  in response to  “worrying” statistics showing that 52 per cent of children think the Bogeyman “will never ever crawl from underneath my bed and get me, no not even if I don’t check”, with another 32 per cent saying “Well I suppose I ought to have a quick look, just in case” while another 15 per cent do not know. Just one per cent agree with the government’s statement: “Yes I believe that the Bogeyman exists and that he represents a greater threat to my future than even Al Qaeda, Gordon Brown’s mismanagement of the economy or racist language on Strictly Come Dancing.. » read more

By midnight tomorrow, all of the nation's full-powered TV stations will shut off the analog signals that brought the iconic shows "I Love Lucy" and the "Cosby Show" to millions of living rooms, marking the biggest change in television viewing since the advent of Technicolor. In their place, broadcasters will air a new breed of digital broadcasts intended to bring crisper pictures and sound to shows like "American Idol.. » read more

Digital TV Transition, Set for June, May Get Early Test

Tuesday, May 12, 2009   Government agencies and broadcasters are working on plans for an early test of the digital TV transition, saying the number of people still unprepared to make the switch has been cut, but that millions of Americans remain at risk of losing television reception next month. One approach under consideration, as the June 12 digital TV transition day approaches, is a nationwide flip of the switch, slated for May 21. Owners of older television sets that have not been equipped with a converter box will be able to tell for certain whether they're prepared for the age of digital programming. Details of the test, in which broadcasters would switch from analog to digital broadcasts for a few minutes, are still in the works. Three months ago, according to research firm Nielsen, 6.. » read more
